TurboTax Login Intuit Settlement: $141 Million for Misled Consumers

The Pennsylvania Attorney General's office has announced a major settlement with TurboTax's owner, Intuit, regarding deceptive practices and aggressive advertising that misled consumers into paying for free tax services. As part of this multistate settlement, approximately 4.4 million consumers nationwide will receive checks in the mail.

In Pennsylvania, 158,779 consumers who were tricked into paying to file their federal tax return will receive more than $4.76 million in reimbursement. Eligible consumers will be contacted by email about the settlement and can expect checks to be mailed in May.

The Attorney General's office accused Intuit of using deceptive practices and aggressive advertising to cheat taxpayers out of their hard-earned money. 'Intuit's deceptive practices and aggressive advertising campaign were unnecessary and illegal, especially when the IRS offers free tax-return services for eligible consumers,' said Attorney General Michelle Henry.

By requiring consumers to pay for tax-return services that should have been available for free, Intuit cheated taxpayers out of their hard-earned money, according to Attorney General Henry. The settlement aims to rectify this injustice and ensure that affected consumers receive the reimbursement they deserve.

This is not the first time Intuit has faced criticism for its business practices. In 2020, the company was accused of misleading customers about the need to pay for tax preparation services when free alternatives were available. The controversy sparked widespread outrage and calls for action from consumer advocacy groups.

The Pennsylvania Attorney General's office encourages consumers who are eligible for the settlement to keep an eye out for emails regarding the reimbursement process. With this settlement, Intuit is taking a significant step towards making amends for its past mistakes.
